Home School and Community Liaison

For all the latest Home School news visit the HSCL news section.

The Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL) was established in the autumn of 1990. The scheme was the brainchild of Dr. Concepta Conaty. On becoming vice-principal and later principal of the Sacred Heart Junior School, Ms Conaty began to involve parents in the education and development of their children.
The scheme aims to promote partnership between parents and teachers. The purpose of this partnership is to enhance pupils’ learning opportunities and to promote their retention in the education system. In addition, the HSCL scheme is the pioneer in involving the school in the life of the community and involving the community and its agencies in the life of the school.

The five goals of the HSCL Scheme focus on:

  • supporting all pupils
  • promoting co-operation between home, school and community
  • empowering parents
  • retaining young people in the education system
  • disseminating best practice

We are very fortunate to have the Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) scheme here in our school. Together both parents and teachers alike promote partnership between home, school and the community to ensure that every child participates fully in the school scheme. Some of the activities which parents become involved in and also have been involved in include:

  • Maths for Fun
  • Reading for Fun
  • Science for Fun
  • Parent and child cookery
  • Gardening
  • Local Education Committee
  • Christmas crafts
  • Christmas Cookery
  • Fun fit
  • Educational trips
  • Knitting
  • Coffee morning
  • Community courses
