How were the video clips made?
Pupils in sixth class with two of their teachers made these video clips. The Digital Video camera used was a Sony DCR TRV 16E. This camera is equipped with both a Firewire DV port and a USB port for connection to a personal computer. In this project we used the USB connection. Using a firewire connection would have the additional value of allowing the edited movie to be saved back to a tape in the camera. Software used was Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker 2. This will only work on Windows XP. Movie Maker 2 is available as a free download from the Microsoft website. It is a very simple but powerful package to use for adding titles, transitions, capturing stills etc. When it comes to saving your movie various options are presented for saving, e-mail, the web, onto the hard disc, onto cd rom using a cd writer or if you are using firewire back to a tape.
If interested in learning more about digital video in the classroom a very useful guide from Microsoft in Education: Using digital Media in Windows XP: A Guide for Educators can be found at

Playback
In order to play these movies on your personal computer you will need Microsoft Windows Media Player installed. Windows XP users should have little difficulty except that Windows Media Player may have to download a video codec. This should happen automatically. You may be prompted to trust content signed by Microsoft. Click on YES to confirm. If you are using an older operating system you may have to update your version of Windows Media Player. These can be downloaded from the Microsoft website or can sometimes be got from the cover discs of a computer magazine. Follow these links for the latest version for your operating system. We have successfully played the clips with the following which are the latest versions for each operating system. They can be downloaded from the Microsoft Website at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx
Windows XP - Windows Media Player 9 (XP comes with version 8)
Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 - Media player 9
Windows 98 - Windows Media Player 7.1
Mac O.S. X - Windows Media Player 9 Mac
Mac O.S. 8.1 and higher - Windows Media Player 7.1 Mac
Tips and Tricks:
If you have audio but no video try updating your version of Windows Media Player
If you plan to project Windows Media Player content you should note that by design Windows media Player does not support multible monitors. If using laptop and projector toggle screen settings to projector only.
